BICHON HELP

Hey lil bichon owners.

We have a 5 month old bichon called Poppy who is a soppy (yet very playful) little gem.
She is rather rubbish with picking up commands such as STAY, SIT and NOOOOOOOO though.

When out walking she has no concept of roads, or direction and is pulling on the lead crossing from side to side pretty much the whole time – she cant seem to get the hang of a straight line.

We are going to enrol her in puppy training school – hopefully teach her a few things.

Has anyone else done this? Was it successful? At 5 months have we left it to late? or are all the probs (which are not big probs at all) just cause she’s so little.

Also, and this isn’t a problem, - but i've looked after a friends bichon b4 who when eating, would pick up her biscuit, walk to her bed, eat it in her bed, then return to her bowl and repeat the process over and over again (which was very cute)
Our puppy also does this. Is this a little bichon trait??

Thank in advance everyone

BICHON HELP

Never taken my 3 boys to training school, but I found the best way was to hold the lead quite far down with one hand whatever side you prefer them to be on and hold poppy close to you . Slowly loosen the hold until poppy realises
to walk properly. Takes a few walks but they do get the idea. As for the eating my eldest boy he always takes food out runs to the living room puts it down then eats it and starts all over again.
Now my youngest boy if he wants tummy rubs he sits on his bottom and waves his front paws in the air whilst moaning and groaning if you dare to stop before he is ready he will then grab your hands with his front paws.
But the best one is the Bichon Blitz were they all run about in circles and chase one another from the living room to the garden and back this lasts for anything between 5 and 30 minutes sometimes they join tails, its hilarious to watch.

BICHON HELP

My bichon, Trixi, is just over a year old, she is actually very good on the lead, as long as its not too long. However in the house is another matter, she knows sit, paw, lie down, but doesn't always respond to them!!
She is a very fussy eater, and always wants whatever I'm eating. When she eats her food, again she does take a bit out and takes it to wherever she feels comfy eating it, and sometimes even leaves it there!
I love watching Trixi blitz, it is truelly one of the funniest things to watch, better than any tv show!!

My Bichon is 17 months old.

My Bichon is 17 months old. I have only had her for two and a half weeks and she is my first dog. When she came to us she was house trained but that was it. She constantly jumped up at people, both in the house and when we took her for a walk. She pulled on the lead, wouldn't listen to anyone and was basically untrained.
We have booked her in for classes which begin mid-March. The man who runs the classes spent half an hour on the phone to me giving me advice on how to begin her training. When she jumps up, which is mostly in first thing in the morning or when she's been left for any length of time, we cross our arms, have no eye contact and ignore her until she calms down. After just a week the difference was huge. She still does it a little bit when she's excited but for the most part its gone! We were told that when out walking, Misty should walk on my left. I hold the end of the lead in my right hand and hold half way down the lead in my left hand. Every time she pulls I give a tug and say 'no'. When the lead becomes loose I give her lots of praise. This is beginning to work and she is walking a lot better now. She only really pulls a lot now when we approach the school at pick up time as she knows she's going to see lots of children and other dogs.
Within a week we had taught her to sit using treats and she now stays for a short time. We're trying to teach her to lie but this is a bit more of a challenge and she's not quite getting it yet.
She also likes to take her food out of her bowl. She takes a bit a few feet away, eats it and then goes back for more. It must be a Bichon thing.
The Blitzing thing is so funny. My 7 year old daughter joins in and runs around the house with Misty which is a great sight.
By the way, does anyone have any tips on how to get Misty to stop chasing my cats. We had 2 cats before we got her and every time she sees then she barks and chases them. She gets very excited and I think she just wants to play. Sometimes we can calm her down by asking her to sit for a treat but this doesn't always work as she's so excited. It's not just cats. We were out walking on a bridleway a couple of days ago and 2 horses came along. The riders were asking the horses to canter so we put Misty on her lead. As soon as the horses went past she went charging after them, tail wagging. Good job my daughter had a tight grip of the lead!!!

Our bichons are the same

Our bichons are the same with cats and, err... double decker red buses?!?

One of our neighbours has a two dimension cutout of a cat with reflective eyes which drives them crazy.

With regard to the walking discipline- keep it up- they get the message in the end. Personally I don't think I will ever get to the stage where I can walk them off the lead. They are just too easilly (very e silly!)distracted.

letting bichons off the lead

I was warned by my breeder to NEVER let Trixi off the lead, as bichon's have very little attention span and will run off quite easily.
I know of someone who got a bichon not long after I got Trixi and they were walking it along the pavement off the lead, it ended up under a bus :(
I hope nobody goes through that tragedy, so please keep your bichons on the lead when walking them!!!

letting bichon on there lead
